The Selection Series by Kiera Cass
You know those books that get so popular that everyone and their mama has read them? They get turned into movies and people talk about them all the time. I’m always way behind the trend. I usually don’t read the books until after the movies have come out. With The Selection Series, I’m not so behind! I’m actually having to wait for the last book to come out.
I have to admit. I love romance. Even cheesy romance movies that typically all have the same plot. I can’t get enough! I also really love dystopian. The way into the future, this could happen but we really hope it doesn’t, kind of stuff. Put the two together and add in some royalty and you pretty much have the perfect storm of a book for me!
Enter Kiera Cass
I don’t know how she did it, but Kiera Cass has created one of my absolutely favorite worlds to dive into. I have read and reread all 4 books and all 4 novellas of The Selection Series at least 3 times! I am working on my 4th right now. I wanted to get a refresher in before the next (and last. Sad.) book comes out on May 3rd!!! I am so excited about this book. So I figured I would write about this series to get everyone excited about the next book.
Warning! Spoilers!
If you have not read The Selection Series and you want to, stop here! Unless you don’t care about Spoilers! Then please, keep reading!
The Selection (Book One)
I have to admit, the reason I wanted to read The Selection was because of the cover. I mean, look at it! It is stunning! The colors, the girl, the reflections. Even the crown logo caught my eye.
It didn’t take me long to get wrapped up in the story. It is the story of a girl named America Singer who lives in the country of Illéa. In a process called The Selection, one girl from each of the 35 provinces in Illéa is selected to move to the palace so the prince can find a wife.
America Singer doesn’t want to apply to be in the Selection but her mother desperately wants her to. It would not only be a good opportunity for her to fall in love (with a Prince no less!), but it would also help their family financially. What her mom doesn’t realize is that America already has a secret boyfriend. In a shocking turn of events, her boyfriend Aspen, tells her to apply for it. He thinks he won’t be able to provide for her and his pride gets in the way. So she fills out the application thinking there was no chance of her getting picked.
I don’t want to tell you everything that happens but it’s kind of obvious that America was chosen as one of the Selected. She moves to the palace and meets Prince Maxon. They have a rough start but the chemistry between the two of them is strong. I really loved that they would argue and still be drawn to each other.
This book has romance, rebels, friendship, secrecy and so much more! It’s no surprise it sucked me in! Who does America choose, Aspen or Maxon?
The Elite (Book Two)
From 35 girls down to six. The Elite. Now it’s serious! America and Maxon are closer now and at the beginning, there is little doubt that he will choose her to be his bride. That is until Marlee is dragged out of the palace to be caned in front of a huge crowd. America is so devasted to lose her best friend but she can’t believe that Maxon would do something like that. She thought he was too caring to hurt someone that he supposedly cared about.
With so much tension between America and Maxon, an opening lets another one of the Elite into Maxon’s heart. He and Kriss start spending more time together and he spends less time with America. She’s angry with him but at the same time, hurt to see him with another girl.
This book has more of the dystopian theme but there is still plenty of romance. However, instead of it being who will America choose, it becomes who will Maxon choose. You also start to see the king’s true nature.
The One (Book Three)
Again, the cover is STUNNING! The One is my favorite book in the series. It’s the last book in The Selection Series from America’s point of view. The rebels have gotten braver and more deadly. When America is summoned to Maxon and he tells her there are rebels in the palace her first reaction is fear. Then he tells her there are only two of them and they want to talk to him, and her!
There is more conspiracy in this book along with the romance. America realizes that there are many more rebels than they ever thought. She and Maxon align themselves with the Northern rebels to work on ending the caste system, in secret. While they are meeting with them, America ends up injured and lost in the streets of Angeles. Thankfully Maxon and Aspen are able to find her!
While I love this book and it is my favorite, it’s also my least favorite because of one part. Every time I read about America’s dad dying, I cry. I absolutely love that he wrote them letters beforehand.
And of course then ending of this book is fantastic! You finally know who Maxon chooses and they get married! *Sigh* I love love.
The Heir (Book Four)
The Heir is the first book in The Selection Series from Eadlyn’s view! The first princess to be heir to the throne and to hold her own Selection. It is definitely NOT her choice, though! She is very independent and headstrong, like her mother! She is the most powerful person in the world. She doesn’t need a man to help her rule the kingdom of Illéa. So why is she going to have the Selection?
There is unrest in the country. Her parents are trying to come up with a solution but they need a distraction. Enter Eadlyn and her Selection! Now 35 young men are taking over her home. Her plan is to scare them and get them to leave without a proposal.
Surprising herself, she starts to actually care about some of the boys. While others are just horrible and shouldn’t be near any women, much less the future queen! While navigating the ups and downs of dating too many boys at once, Eadlyn’s twin brother runs off and gets married. She is devastated that he left her alone to deal with the Selection. But when her mother ends up in the hospital wing of the palace, Eadlyn’s problems seem so much smaller.
Her mom can’t die!!! I will be so upset if she does. The Heir ends on that huge cliffhanger! Which is why I am so freaking excited about the next book!
The Crown (Book Five)
EEEEK!!! May 3rd CAN NOT get here fast enough! I’ve had a countdown on my phone for The Crown release date for a while now. I can’t believe it is only 15 days away!
I’m hoping that Eadlyn’s mom will be ok. I’m also hoping Eadlyn chooses one of the Selected to become her Prince. Even though she was dead set against it in The Heir. I’m also hoping that her brother comes back! At least to visit their mom!
If you’ve read the books but not the novellas you should definitely read them! The Queen is about Maxon’s mother. The Prince is the beginning of The Selection from Maxon’s view. The Guard is from Aspen’s view and The Favorite is from Marlee’s view. They fill in the blanks about several things!
Well, that’s all I have for you now. I hope I didn’t give toooooo much away if you haven’t read The Selection Series and you still want to. They are great books and I have the feeling that I will read them over and over and over again. Heck, I already have!
