Planning A Grade A+ Graduation Party
We have a graduate! I am so proud of my stepdaughter. Since she lived in North Carolina I knew I wanted to plan a graduation party for her here so my family could be a part of the celebration as well. It ended up really great because my in-laws got to be here as well!
Planning a Grade A+ Graduation Party takes a lot of planning! Here are just some of the things I did.
Pinterest Is Your Friend
The Secret Pinterest board is a work of genius. I didn’t want her to see anything I was planning. So, I added my husband, my sister, and my mom all to that board so we could come up with some awesome ideas for her graduation party. Since the party is over, I’ve opened up the board so you can see it too!
The problem with Pinterest is the vast amount of ideas you will find! I have 134 pins just on the one board! Obviously, I wasn’t going to be able to do everything. I grabbed a notebook and started writing down the things I knew I definitely wanted to do.
You can go as simple or as overboard as you want with this. Some of the ideas I saw were super cute but I knew it would be too much work for me. I knew I wanted to do black and gold for the colors. It’s so classy and timeless. I found this really cute banner printable that we hung up with twine. This post from Lil’ Sprout Greetings has the banner and the cupcake toppers as free printables! As well as thank you cards.
I didn’t go overboard on decorations. Just the banner, a few streamer things, and the photo board. I have made several big photo boards over the years. I had gotten around 300 pictures printed through Shutterfly (thank you for sales!) so I also made her a scrapbook. I saw several ideas on Pinterest for the photo board, but I just kinda made up my own. Here is a closer picture of it.
I knew a long time ago that I wanted people to write in the Oh, The Places You’ll Go! book for her. I made up the little sign next to it. It says “Please Leave Your Advice and Well Wishes for the Graduate in the book for her to read”. She LOVED it! She made sure every single person wrote a message in it. It was cute.
I also made up the chalkboard sign about her, next to it. I had seen a similar one on Pinterest. Shocking, right! I emailed her questions for the sign and for a game we played. She didn’t know what it was for until the party. Everyone liked the signs I made. I love that it was all personalized for her.
My mom got her this chalkboard photo frame as well as the wooden 2016 that was next to the photo board. We had everyone sign the chalkboard and she’s going to hang it in her room. I also made the sign in the photo frame. I thought it was a cute saying.
My stepdaughter is THE. PICKIEST. EATER. EVER! I’m not even kidding. She pretty much only eats chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, corn dogs, kraft mac & cheese, and a few other (not so healthy) items. I literally have a list of foods she will eat. It’s less than 100. It’s sad.
So we knew we needed to have food that she would eat. I also wanted to have food that the rest of us would like! I think we did pretty well!
Turkey Dogs & Turkey Burgers
Fixin’s for the burgers, Red Potato Salad from Publix (YUM!), and chips & Salsa
Squash casserole. Southern staple. My sister-in-law is gluten sensitive so we made her some with gluten free corn flakes!
Roasted Brussels Sprouts and Asparagus. Of course, my stepdaughter didn’t eat any of that. Neither did my mother-in-law or my brother-in-law. I see where she gets it!
Yummy baked beans
Kraft mac & cheese for the picky eaters! And some gluten free too!
Can’t forget the buns. I even had napkins in her school colors! (see one of the generic centerpiece things?)
We got chocolate and vanilla cupcakes from Publix. They were so good! These are the cupcake toppers I printed and put together.
I didn’t want the party to be just eating and talking. She had a few gifts to open. I had also planned games. Since I had been in planning mode for a graduation party and a baby shower, I thought similar games would work. I used PicMonkey to make up some cute games that I had, again, seen on Pinterest.
It was fun. One of the guests was my stepdaughter’s friend from my mom’s church. It was sad how few points she got on the What’s in Your Phone game! LOL!
We had a great time! I was thrilled to see everyone appreciated the hard work I put into the graduation party. My stepdaughter had a huge grin on her face the whole time! Unfortunately, we were having so much fun that we forgot to take pictures together. Which is a shame since my parents-in-law live in Montana and my brother-in-law and his wife live in Washington! I did take a picture of the graduate and her friend.
Apparently, favors aren’t really typical at a graduation party. I didn’t see too many ideas that I liked but I knew I wanted to give something out. I also wanted it to be useful, so I made bookmarks! We had gotten her senior pictures done last summer before she went back to her mom’s house. I love how they looked on the bookmarks! I used these tassels for the bookmarks.
Super cute. And very easy to make on PicMonkey. I also made the sign, which I got the idea from… you guessed it! Pinterest!!
Pretty simple. Not too much work and loads of fun! If you aren’t tech savvy like me you can even get most of these things made on Etsy or even find them for free on Pinterest.
What’s your favorite graduation party idea?
